Lanterns like this were originally used in photographic dark rooms when developing negatives and prints in the late 1800’s or early 1900’s. The red filter that was placed in front of the light to block wavelengths that would damage new prints and photographs has been replaced with a backlit image of he Rosette Nebula, a cloud emitting mostly hydrogen gas and dust roughly 5,200 light years from earth.
