Brass lanterns like this were originally used on cargo ships during the 1800’s and later reproductions were sold as souvenirs to commemorate particular fleets. This lantern illuminates an image of IC 1396 H-Alpha, an active star forming region roughly 2,000 light years from Earth and full of glowing hydrogen gas.
